Other people will not be covered by Marshmallow to drive the vehicle, unless they are a named driver on your policy. You can add additional drivers to your car insurance policy, but this is not possible for van policies.

How to add an additional driver to your car insurance

You can add an additional driver directly in the Marshmallow app:

  • Open the Marshmallow app.
  • Tap Manage policy.
  • Tap Update details.
  • Tap Manage additional drivers.

Follow the prompts to add or remove a driver.

If someone drives your car without being a named driver on your policy, they will not be covered by Marshmallow insurance.

Requirements for additional drivers

The driver you want to add must meet all of the following criteria:

  • UK resident
  • Over 21 years old

If holding a provisional licence:

  • Must be aged 21–40 when the policy starts, unless they are the only provisional licence holder on the policy — then 40+ is acceptable.
  • Cannot be over 75 years old
  • Must not have had insurance cancelled or refused

  • The driver’s full legal name (no nicknames)

Do you offer temporary cover for additional driver

Yes, we offer temporary cover. Your added driver will be insured for the rest of your policy year. If they only need cover for a shorter period, just contact us again to remove them.

You'll only pay a pro-rata rate, based on the time they’re insured.

Fees for adding a driver

The fee to add an additional driver depends on your Marshmallow insurance plan:

  • Marshmallow Lighted or Essential: £25
  • Marshmallow Original or Plus: No fee

Your premium may go up or down depending on the driver’s age, licence type, and driving history.

If another driver already has their own insurance, can they drive my car?

Some car insurance policies include a feature called Driving Other Cars (DOC). This usually provides basic third-party cover only, which means:

  • It is only valid if your car already has its own primary insurance policy.
  • It does not cover damage to your car.

If the driver causes an accident, you would need to pay for repairs or replacement of your vehicle.
