Insurance documents can feel overwhelming. Here we explain what each document contains and what it’s for.
Once your policy is created, you can download six main documents from the Marshmallow app or your online account. Each one contains important information about your cover, so please read them carefully.
Which policy documents will I receive?
You’ll receive the following documents:
- Certificate of Motor Insurance
- Motor Insurance Schedule
- Policy Wording
- Summary of Cover
- Motor Insurance IPID (Insurance Product Information Document)
- Terms of Business Agreement
If you buy add-ons like Breakdown Cover or Legal Expenses, you’ll also get documents from our third-party providers (AXA, The AA, or Lawshield). These include a Cover Schedule, Policy Wording, and IPID for each add-on.
What does each policy document mean?
1. Certificate of Motor Insurance
This is your proof of insurance. If the police stop you, this is the document you must show. You can show either a digital or printed copy.
It includes:
- Your policy number
- Marshmallow’s name and address
- Your vehicle registration
- Your name (and any additional drivers)
- The start and end dates of your policy
- Your class of use (explains how you’re allowed to use the car)
- Whether you’re insured to drive other people’s vehicles
2. Motor Insurance Schedule
This contains details specific to your policy, such as:
- Your level of cover (all Marshmallow policies are Comprehensive)
- Any add-ons (e.g. Breakdown Cover, Legal Expenses)
- Your total excess
- Your estimated annual mileage
- Your total price, including discounts or extra costs
If something looks wrong on your Schedule, please contact us to amend it.

- What is covered and what isn’t
- How loss, damage, fire, and theft are handled
- Cover for personal accidents, belongings, and medical expenses
- Glass damage rules
- Rules for driving abroad
- How your data is used and protected
4. Summary of Cover
A shorter guide that explains the Policy Wording in simpler terms. If you’re unsure about something in the Policy Wording, check the Summary of Cover for clarity.

The IPID provides quick answers to common questions, including:
- What is and isn’t insured
