When you get a quote with us, we’ll ask how you use your vehicle. This isn’t just a formality. It’s an important step that makes sure your cover protects you and others based on why you are driving.

Different types of vehicle use come with different risks. Choosing the right category means:

  • Your insurance policy will be valid and accurate.
  • You’ll avoid problems if you ever need to make a claim.
  • You’ll have peace of mind knowing you’re properly covered.

To make things simple, we’ve broken it down by cars and vans so you can see your options clearly.

Car usage options

1. Just social

Also known as “Social, Domestic and Pleasure” or SDP. It includes:

  • Covers you and any named drivers to drive outside of working hours (e.g. visiting friends and family, shopping, running errands, or travelling.

2. I drive to and from work

Also known as “Social, Domestic, Pleasure & Commuting” or SDPC. Standard on all our policies at no extra cost. It includes everything in Social driving, plus:

  • Cover to commute to and from a fixed place of work (e.g. office, shop, or another regular workplace).

3. I use it for work

Also known as “Business Use” or “Business Class”. We only offer Class 1 business insurance for cars.

Class 1 business car insurance includes:

  • All the cover in SDPC for social use and commuting.
  • Travel to and from multiple places of work.
  • Cover for you, plus a spouse or partner named on the policy for business use.
  • Other named drivers will only be covered for social and commuting.

Not covered by Class 1 business use:

  • Couriers or delivery drivers.
  • People carrying work-related tools (e.g. tradespeople, sales reps).
  • Using your car during working hours.

4. Commercial vehicle use

We do not currently offer Commercial cover. Commercial cover is for:

  • Private hire taxis
  • Driving instructors
  • Couriers & delivery drivers

If you need this, you’ll need to find cover with another provider (but check back with us next year!).

Using your car for commercial work without the right cover means:

  • We won’t be able to pay out for claims.
  • It may count as an offence and affect future insurance.
